Some of these distros may be unix based. (same difference) No huge difference between the two operating systems and I like unix just as much. You do know that linux is basically unix right? These iso files are for 32 bit x86 architecture computers. The 32 bit version will work on 32 bit and 64 bit intel and AMD processors, however, If you have a powerpc or any other processor in your computer , go to the distro's site and hope they provide a version for your system. New macs bought from apple from 2007+ have Intel CPUs, so most of these should work. To start your mac from the CD, hold down the option key when you turn it on with the disk inside, and click the CD when it comes up in the menu. Download the .iso of the linux or unix distribution of your choice, insert a blank CD-R or CD-RW, if a window comes up automatically, close it. in windows, download infra-recorder here, and burn the image with it. In linux, with or without a GUI, get to a terminal, type cdrecord then the name of the file, and hit enter. In Mac OS X, use disk utility to write it to CD. Once write is complete, make sure the disk is in the CD drive, with the tray closed, then restart with the disk inside. It should boot from the cd. if not, configure your BIOS to allow it. (it may say press Blankityblank to enter setup. choose that and adjust the setting to allow CD booting. Don't touch anything but that setting unless you know what you are doing, like me.

Download Damn Small linux Really tiny, uses kernel 2.4.

Download Tiny Core Linux 1.4 Really really tiny. Makes you wonder how they did it. Super duper itty bitty. Better hope you know how to either get online or mount a hard disk, because tiny core can't do much without it's extensions. One major flaw is that it throws a fit over GTK. Dillo, yes, Firefox, no.

Download Puppy Linux A small, quick, but functional linux.

Download NimbleX 2008A interesting, cozy, cheery linux. Perfect for liveCD use.

Download Mandriva One 2010 KDE A tweakable and cozy linux with a great base. This is the KDE version.

Download Mandriva One 2010 GNOME A tweakable and cozy linux with a great base. This is the GNOME version. No, I will not include Mandriva Free. No support for anything but the basics. It's not a bad distro, but it's just too barebones.

Download the Slackware 13.0 DVD image Yes, it's a DVD image. I have tried slackware, and I like it, but it should be used only by moderately skilled users. Perfect for servers.

Download SimplyMEPIS 8.0 Kind of abstract theme, while using an obsolete version of KDE, but all-in-all, a nice debian distro. Good for liveCDs.

Download Ubuntu 9.10 A fun, stable, and easy linux.

Download Kubuntu KDE desktop Ubuntu 9.10 Lots of extra features, really nice effects, even funner than ubuntu, but slower.

Download Xubuntu XFCE desktop Ubuntu 9.10 Basically ubuntu with a smaller, but just as functional window manager. good for old systems with only 256 MB of RAM.

Download Ubuntu Netbook Remix Even funner than kubuntu, really easy, nice look and feel, and optimized for netbooks. A little incomplete on a desktop. You will now have to download unetbootin to install this on a netbook without a cd drive, but unetbootin is available for download here, just click downloads and then utilities.

Download gOS 2.9 Space The Famous Mac OS X Leopard clone. Pretty cool, but best for webians. This is the one distro that needs to be written to a DVD here. Just a little bit too big.

Download gOS 3.1 gadgets A Mac OS X clone, very small but harmless bugs in a few places, but really cool.

Download Linux Mint 7 Gloria I love this one. It's really awesome. It has tons of awesome features and the look can make you cry from too much beauty. (not really, but it is good looking). Linux Mint Provides many useful utilities that you will probably use every day. Mint 7 is even better than 6.

Download CentOS 5.4 CentOS is a Red Hat Enterprise derivative, and a very good one at that. Red hat Enterprise is not free, but they do allow you to export/modify/redistribute Red Hat enterprise Linux under a few terms. CentOS is a result of this. The software included is somewhat out-of-date, but the drivers and hardware support is very well up to date. I currently (as of Nov 7, 2009) run it on my Kiosk style machine, it runs well. It did take some fiddling, and you do have to run startx after logging in, but for the more geeky types who want a compatible linux with a great set of software, CentOS is for you.

IMPORTANT: This LiveCD does not include an automated installer in the live system, but it does include a network install (download components over the web) option at the boot screen. They basically dropped the contents of the Netinstall CD in the LiveCD as well. If you want to just install CentOS over the network, click here, or to go to the mirror to look at other files, click here.

Download Fedora 12 GNOME A secure but fun and intuitive linux distro using GNOME.

Download Fedora 12 KDE The latest version of a secure but fun and intuitive linux distro using KDE.

Download OpenSUSE 11.2 KDE Good for sick kicks. Really futuristic, the nice kind.

Download OpenSUSE 11.2 GNOME also good for sick kicks, but not as futuristic, but easier to find settings.

(Man, sorry for leaving that typo there so long, I meant EASIER, NOT harder.)

Download OpenSolaris 06 2009 Oh, I love this one. Really cool, but does not have as good of a support for weird, foreign hardware.

Download Gentoo 2008.0 Just as they brag, very tweakable, warm homey feeling to it, good support for everything.
